August Bank Holiday – think pharmacy, think 111

Many of us may be making plans for the bank holiday on Monday 27 August. But if your plans are spoiled by a minor illness you may want to get advice.

A number of pdf community pharmacies are open (99 KB) throughout Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent on Bank Holiday Monday. And NHS 111 is also available to offer help and advice 24/7.

Dr Manir Hussain, the Deputy Director for Primary Care and Medicines Optimisation for the area’s CCGs said: “Pharmacists are highly skilled and able to advise on a wide range of minor illnesses. There are pharmacies open throughout the area on Bank Holiday Monday. They are also able to sell a range of over-the-counter medicines that will help with self-care.

“If you need urgent help out-of-hours then NHS 111 is the number to call. Trained call handlers can give you the advice you need, or direct you to the service best for your need.”

Dr Hussain added: “At any time of year, it’s a good idea to have a well-stocked medicine cabinet. For under £10, you can fill your medicine cabinet with a range of painkillers, antihistamines and treatments for minor ailments. If you’re out and about over the bank holiday weekend, you could add a small first aid kit to your bag or the boot of the car, just in case.”
