Patients see behind the scenes as surgery hosts its first open day

Patients at a Burton GP practice were able to see behind the scenes when it held its very first open day.

It also gave them a chance to chat with GPs and other staff at Gordon Street Surgery and find out about a range of health services available to them GP partner Dr Muhammad Ahmed said: “As part of improvements to the way we work we wanted to engage with patients in an informal setting and get them more involved with the practice.

“We provided patients with this opportunity by offering access and information on local services plus help and advice from our team.”

As well as being able to meet the staff there were representatives and information stands from Age UK, Alzheimer’s Society, Approach, Carers Association, Citizens Advice, Diabetes UK, Everyone Health, Mind, and St Giles Hospice.

Patients could also talk to a medication expert from East Staffordshire CCG and find out more about diabetes management and bowel cancer screening.

Cupcakes were sold to raise money for St Giles Hospice.

GP partner Dr Venkat Palaniappan said: “Our afternoon showed a good community spirit, and feedback from the patients that attended has been unanimously positive. They have asked us to hold another open day next year and that is what we plan to do.”
