Healthwatch Staffordshire Needs Ambassadors

Every health and care system in England has produced a Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) showing how local services will become sustainable by 2020/21. The plans set out how health outcomes will be improved, how care and quality will be improved and how the health and care systems can be made financially sustainable. Local health and care systems came together in January 2016 to form 44 STP geographic 'footprints'. Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent were formed as one of these footprints and have worked together to produce the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP).

Jan Sensier Chief Executive Officer of Healthwatch Staffordshire said: “Healthwatch Staffordshire welcomes the publication of the STP as we firmly believe that the STP process should be as transparent as possible. In all the events we have held about the STP over the past five weeks, we have heard some excellent debates with some really interesting comments and suggestions made by members of the public. This shows the importance or working with local communities to design their local services, and we look forward to working with the STP to ensure this happens as the plans are further developed.

The Sustainability and Transformation Plan for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent focuses on five major workstreams:

Focused Prevention/Prevention and Wellbeing
Focus investment and prevention activities on tackling the top 3 issues e.g. obesity, smoking and diabetes along with addressing health inequalities.

Enhanced Primary and Community Care
Enhance and integrate primary and community care to enable frail elderly and those with LTCs to live independent lives and avoid unnecessary, costly and upsetting emergency episodes.

Simplified Urgent and Emergency Care
Simplify emergency and urgent care services across the system to reduce avoidable A&E attendances and non-elective admissions

Effective and Efficient Planned Care
Reconfigure planned care services to meet patient needs, improve productivity and remove duplication and overcapacity.

Reduce the Cost of Services
Accelerate the delivery of productivity and efficiency plans. Reduce total bed capacity and rationalise estates. Increase provider collaboration to reduce management costs.

To ensure the public have a voice, Healthwatch Staffordshire have implemented an ‘Ambassador Programme’; volunteers are being trained to go out into their communities and share the message of the STP and gather valuable insight from the public, which shall then be fed back to the STP, with the vision that as service users we can help shape what we want from our NHS services.

Attached is a training schedule, we ask each person who expresses an interest in the programme to undertake one (2hr) training session and decide after if the programme is something they wish to pursue.
